On 7 November also the second police training seminar of this year which has been conducted with German support at the Jakarta Centre of Law Enforcement Cooperation (JCLEC) in Semarang was successfully completed. This activity is the result of a joint program between the German Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs (AA), the German Embassy in Indonesia and the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF). The topic of this seminar was “Organized Crime Investigations”. The seminar was conducted by two police officials of the Federal State of Bavaria/Germany, Kriminaloberrat Peter Breitner and Kriminaldirektor Bernhard Egger, who had been instructing 25 police officials from nearly all provinces of Indonesia since 27 October.

From 7 to 9 October the 11th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting on the Environment (IAMME) took place in Hanoi (Vietnam). During this conference the awarding ceremony of the first ASEAN Environmentally Sustainable City (ESC) Award took place on the evening of 8 October. In this ceremony one city in each of the ten ASEAN member countries has been awarded for its achievements in providing provide clean water, land and air to its inhabitants. The Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Jakarta, which has been represented at this event by its director, Dr. Ulrich Klingshirn, is part of the working group on the ESC program. Thus each of the ten cities has not only been awarded with the official ASEAN trophy but also by the prize of HSF Jakarta. Among the Indonesian cities Palembang, provincial capital of South Sumatra, has been awarded.

Japanese survey selects HSF as “Good Practice”. In a survey commissioned and financed by the Japan Bank for International Cooperation about community-based environmental projects in Indonesia, the Hanns Seidel Foundation has been chosen as good practice. It obtains the second rank in the category “Water and Soil Conservation”. Altogether 111 projects were included into this survey, 55 have been visited, but only 21 of them have been awarded as good practices and presented in a booklet.

There came an invitation from the Ministry to access the expertise of Dr. Waldemar Mathews, Managing Director of the Bavarian Institute for Applied Environmental Research and Technology (BIfA) in dealing with the rapidly expanding problem of waste disposal – particularly in the Greater Jakarta region.

ASEAN Secretariat and ASEAN Working Group on Environmentally Sustainable Cities in collaboration with UNEP and HSF held a workshop on Environmentally Sustainable Cities in ASEAN for managers and officials of ASEAN countries and mayor cities, 2-4 December 2003 in Singapore. P.E.E. Turns Five! Congratulations! It was just five years ago that the Environmental Education Team of HSF (P.E.E.), was born, right here in Indonesia. The auspicious “birth” took place in August 1998, at a ceremony in Hotel Sari Pan Pacific Jakarta, “mothered” by HSF, “fathered” by Dr. Helmut Wittmann (Germany), and “midwifed” by the GTZ-SEQIP (Science Education Quality Improvement Program).

Strengthening Teaching Capacity in the Field of Environmental Education: “Toward the Greening of Our Schools”. A three-day Workshop and Training Session on Environmental Education was held in PPLH Seloliman (Environmental Education Center of Seloliman) area for Primary, Secondary and High School teachers. 25 teachers were in attendance at this event, conducted jointly by HSF and PPLH Seloliman. It was held at the Environmental Education Center between 1-3 August 2003.
