Environmental Education Experts` Meeting “Preparation of Climate Change Module; Education for Sustainable Development” for Junior High Schools was held in Yogyakarta, 19 – 20 October 2009
Responding to the growing demand of stakeholders for environmental education module for junior high schools, the Hanns Seidel Foundation (HSF) Indonesia has invited multi stakeholders’ experts to discuss its plan to develop the module. The meeting that was moderated by Director and Program Coordinator of HSF, Dr. Ulrich Klinghsirn and Ms Nila Puspita respectively, attended by a total of 15 experts coming from NGOs, universities, Ministries of Environment and National Education and teachers. The aim of the experts’ meeting was to discuss and make further arrangements for the preparation of the module.
The module is expected to address the UN decade of Education for Sustainable Development 2005-2012, and current environmental problems. As a result, the participants agreed to focus the module on “Climate Change; Education for Sustainable Development” targeting to junior high schools. The contents of these learning materials shall include issues related to the largest contributors to greenhouse gas emission in Indonesia that leads to the Climate Change such as “Deforestation”, “Transportation” and “Energy”. The mentioned topics have to be didactically worked out, so that the students become aware of the importance of mitigating climate change in a simple and understandable manner. Moreover, measures shall be discussed on how schools’ community role contributes to mitigate climate change. The learning materials for junior high schools should serve the need of students of 7th, 8th and 9th grade. In this respect, teams will be formed to elaborate the mentioned topics according to the requirements of the respective grades.
The preparation of learning materials on climate change is highly challenging due to the fact that understanding and experiences of educators on the issues are undeveloped. This finding is also expressed by the British Council in their current research on mapping Climate Education in Indonesia 2009. In this respect, extending the team with those who are knowledgeable and actively follow the development of the issue is very important in order to produce the hands-on module. The module is expected to be ready for teachers’ training by end of this year.
