Hanns Seidel Foundation Indonesia - UNEP ROAP and Tongji University jointly conducted the 6th Asia-Pacific Young Leadership Program on Environment for Sustainable Development on 16-21 November 2009 in Tongji University, Shanghai, China.
The joint flagship professional development program aimed at improving the all-round thinking and decision-making abilities of young and promising leaders in government organizations, NGOs and private enterprises in the Asia and Pacific regions. It provides a balanced approach on various aspects of environment, economy and society. Moreover, the integration of the human dimension - mind, body and soul-, into the contextual and relational aspects of leadership will be performed.
A total of 25 representatives of Asia Pacific countries, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyz Republic, Turkmenistan, Nepal, Bhutan, India, Pakistan, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand, Samoa, China, Mongolia, and international organizations like IGES, UNEP and HSF participated in the training. Trainers of the training come from the Asia Pacific Regional University consortium, which is currently comprised eight prestigious institutions, namely the Asian Institute of Technology, Griffith University, Nanyang Technological University, Tongji University and United Nations University.
The training was officially opened by UNEP ROAP Deputy Director, Ms. Dechen Tsering, and held jointly with Climate Change Forum of Bayer – Tongji - UNEP. Above all, the leadership’s participants benefited from the panel’s discussion “Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Strategies, a comparative discussion based on regional and international viewpoints”, moderated by Mahesh Pradhan, UNEP ROAP. On behalf of the Hanns Seidel Foundation Indonesia, Ms. Nila Puspita, delivered remarks in the opening session, thanking UNEP for the outstanding partnership and good cooperation. She underlined that HSF contribution to the leadership program that started in 2004 is to promote the implementation of the ASEAN Environmental Education Action Plans to the Asia and Pacific regions.
Among other topics delivered in the training were, “Sustainable Development, Paradigm Harmonizing”, “Learning for Change; Values and Ethics in ESD”, “Philosophy of Sustainable Development”, “Leadership Skills”, “Corporate Leadership”, “Environmental Leadership and Governance”, “Atmosphere and Climate Change”, “Water and Wastewater”, “Solid Waste”, “Eco-city”, “Urban Disaster Management”, “Energy Efficiency in the Urban Context”, “Green New Deal”, Green GDP” and “Social Focus in Urban Development”.
